About the diocese
A local Church of the Nsukka cultural zone in Enugu State, Nigeria, in the ecclesiastical province of Onitsha.
The Catholic Diocese of Nsukka was created out of the Diocese of Enugu by Pope John Paul II on 19 November 1990. Its first bishop, Francis Emmanuel Ogbonnaya Okobo, was consecrated by the Pope himself at St. Peter’s Basilica on 6 January 1991 and installed at St. Theresa’s Cathedral, Nsukka, on 2 February 1991.
In 2013 Pope Francis appointed Most Rev. Prof. Godfrey Igwebuike Onah as the second Bishop of Nsukka. He was consecrated and installed at St. Theresa’s Cathedral on 4 July 2013. Under his leadership the Cathedral, a project of three decades, was dedicated in November 2020.
