Most Rev. Prof. Godfrey Igwebuike Onah was born on 18 August 1956 in Imilike-Ani, Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State.

From an early age, he demonstrated a deep sense of faith and a passion for learning, which would later define both his priestly vocation and his intellectual mission.

He pursued his formation for the priesthood at Bigard Memorial Seminary, Enugu, where he graduated with First Class Honours (Summa Cum Laude) in both Philosophy and Theology. On July 28, 1984, he was ordained a Catholic priest by the late Bishop Michael U. Eneja at the Holy Ghost Cathedral, Enugu. Following the creation of the Diocese of Nsukka in 1990, he became incardinated into his home diocese.

In further service to the Church, Fr. Onah undertook advanced studies in Rome at the Pontifical Urbaniana University, where he obtained a Licentiate in Philosophy with distinction and later a Doctorate in Philosophy, both with Summa Cum Laude honors. His scholarly focus was on philosophical anthropology and self-transcendence in human history. His intellectual brilliance earned him an academic career at the Urbaniana, where he rose to the rank of Professor of Philosophy and served as Vice Rector. He was also appointed Consultor to the General Secretariat of the Synod of Bishops at the Vatican, contributing his expertise to the universal Church.

On April 13, 2013, Pope Francis appointed him the second Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka. His episcopal consecration took place on July 4, 2013, marking the beginning of a dynamic and fruitful episcopacy. Since then, Bishop Onah has provided visionary leadership, guiding the diocese through remarkable growth in priestly vocations, pastoral initiatives, and structural development.

Notably, he oversaw the dedication of St. Theresa’s Cathedral, Nsukka, in November 2020, bringing to completion a project that spanned three decades. He has also played a pivotal role in fostering peace and justice in local communities, including championing the abolition of caste-based discrimination and slavery practices in parts of Nsukka.

A gifted preacher, teacher, and shepherd, Bishop Onah is known for his pastoral zeal, intellectual depth, and commitment to the cultural and spiritual renewal of his people. He continues to emphasize the centrality of the sacramental life, especially the Eucharist and the Sacrament of Penance, while encouraging priests and laity alike to live their Christian vocation with faith, integrity, and joy.
